Bahamian Student Killed By Police in US

Connecticut State Police are currently investigating the death of a Bahamian medical student who died over the weekend after police used a stun gun on him twice in eight hours.

31-year-old Lashano Gilbert was arrested by New London officers after being accused of an attempted carjacking around 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Officers said they were forced to use the stun gun because Gilbert was allegedly uncooperative and violent. Gilbert was in New London, Connecticut visiting relatives when local police officers arrested him.

NBC Connecticut reports that police say Gilbert, was in an ‘altered state of mind’ and ‘speaking in a bizarre manner when he was approached’. Gilbert reportedly told police he was hearing voices and when he behaved in a threatening manner toward them, they used the stun gun. Reports are that they initially used the taser for allegedly resisting arrest Friday evening and a second time for allegedly attacking a police officer at a police station early Saturday morning. Officials say that he became “unresponsive” on the way to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he died shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Connecticut performed an autopsy on his body on Sunday. However the official cause of death will not be known for four to six weeks, according to the office.
