AG Hits Back at Dame Joan

Attorney General Allyson Maynard Gibson was present at the groundbreaking of the second phase of the pointe this weekend and took the opportunity to speak to reporters and address comments made by Dame Joan Sawyer last week.

The former President of the Court of Appeal, said there is much confusion over how the judgment of a publicly-heard civil case could be sealed so that no one, outside the judge who heard the case.

Mrs. Maynard-Gibson said she was deeply concerned about the comments especially coming from someone of her stature.

“We know that The Bahamas’ courts are comprised of very smart, independent and hardworking judges, it is very important for every Bahamian to recognize, treasure and protect.

“We have every confidence that the judge in making his decision based on the evidence put before him and he made up his mind based on the evidence of the law.

“If any party or interested party to the proceedings disagreed with that, thank God we live in a country where we have appellate courts, I’m deeply concerned about persons who know better undermining the integrity of the judiciary and I call upon right thinking people to call upon them to cease and desist.

“The institution of the judiciary is extremely important to law and order in a democracy,” Mrs. Maynard-Gibson said.

Now when asked by reporters as to when will the documents actually be unsealed Mrs. Maynard Gibson did not give a definite date but did emphasized that it will be done before the resort officially opens on the April 21st.
