Twenty-three straw vendors in Exuma were each presented with a $2,300 cheque from Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis on Monday.

The 23 cheques totalled $52,900 which was given to the straw vendors on behalf of the government during a service of thanksgiving hosted by the Exuma Christian Council and the Straw Vendors Authority (SVA).

The presentation of the cheques came two months following a fire that destroyed the straw market in Georgetown, Exuma in April.

Deputy Prime Minister Davis said the aftermath of the fire has permitted him to witness a demonstration that people still care for one another.

“We saw straw vendors from all over The Bahamas rallying behind their sister here in Exuma to provide them with supplies for their stalls. We saw the church come to the rescue with its time, talent and treasure,” he said.

“Given the precedent set in the aftermath of the Nassau Straw Market in 2000, I am pleased to announce that this government has approved the grant of $2,300 to each of the 23 vendors claiming loses due to the fire at the straw market in George Town , Exuma. There is truth in the saying that you cannot say thank you enough.”

Mr. Davis applauded the SVA for their efficient operation throughout The Bahamas and especially commended its Chairman Kevin Simmons.

Mr. Simmons also reminded the vendors to always notice the positivity within tragedy.
