Nurse Suspended for Ambulance Use at Prom

After the dramatic prom entrance that shocked the world, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that severe consequences will be given to those responsible in allowing a high school student to be transported to her school prom via an ambulance.

“The Ministry of Health, wishes to inform the Public that on Sunday, June 14, 2015, the Department of Public Health was informed that there was a report on Facebook that an ambulance under the management of the Public Hospitals’ Authority in Marsh Harbour, Abaco was used to transport a high school graduate to her school prom on Saturday, June 13, 2015,” according to a statement released by the ministry.

“As a result of the information received, an immediate investigation by the department was carried out to verify the accuracy of the report. Subsequently, the officer who participated in the matter was asked to submit a formal report regarding her involvement in the unauthorized use of the emergency medical vehicle for non-health related activity.”
The ministry said although it is difficult or rather impossible to penalize the student, the person responsible for allowing her to use the ambulance will be held accountable.

“On receipt of the signed report by the nurse outlining her involvement, the Ministry of Health, in accordance with the Bahamas Nurses Union Agreement 22.04, Public Service Commission Regulation 43 and General Orders 1041, has placed the officer on administrative leave with effect from June 17, 2015 pending the outcome of a full investigation of the matter,” the statement read.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to make it patently clear that there is zero tolerance for such misuse and abuse of public resources in the ministry, inclusive of the Department of Public Health and Public Hospitals’ Authority, while noting that, at the same –time, there could have been a real need for emergency medical response, which would have been delayed by this frivolous activity.”
