The investigation into claims that Minister of Agriculture and MICAL MP V. Alfred Gray interfered in the judicial process has been completed and the case file has been sent to the attorney general for further review and a decision on whether the minister will face charges, Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade confirmed yesterday.
The commissioner said the case file was turned over to Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson on Monday afternoon; however, he did not indicate whether a recommendation was made to bring charges against the minister.
”As requested by the attorney general, we conducted the investigation, saw all witnesses and took statements and reports.
Consistent with the attorney general’s request, the case file was sent to her for review and decision as to charges or otherwise,” Mr. Greenslade said in a statement.
Mr. Gray has come under fire amid claims that he interfered in the judicial process by intervening in a legal matter on behalf of a constituent of his on Mayaguana.
The resident had been charged and convicted for a number of offenses and was subsequently sentenced to a prison term by Mayaguana Island Administrator Zepheniah Newbold.
However, it is alleged that Mr. Gray ordered the administrator to release the resident on bail.
Mr. Gray has denied interfering in the judicial process, but has admitted to suggesting to Mr. Newbold that he grant bail to the resident given that the matter was under appeal.
In late March, Prime Minister Perry Christie under pressure from Opposition critics who demanded Mr. Gray step down or be fired, announced that the matter had been turned over to the attorney general’s office for investigation. Soon after, it was announced that a police investigation into the claims would get underway.
Since the allegations, Mr. Gray who previously served as both minister of agriculture and local government was relieved of his local government ministerial duties.
He has maintained his innocence and insisted that he would be vindicated.
Meanwhile, the opposition continues to call for his full resignation or termination.
