Team Restoration has promised to revitalise, rebuild and restore The Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU) by defeating BPSU President John Pinder and members of the current executive team when elections are held next month, Restoration’s Leader Alexander Burrows said Thursday.
During a press conference yesterday, Mr. Burrows attacked Mr. Pinder’s leadership record which he claims has been ineffective and lackluster.
Further, Mr. Burrows said under Mr. Pinder’s leadership which is now into its twelfth year, there has been a dramatic decline in union membership.
Mr. Pinder, he claimed, has lost the trust of the BPSU and its members.
“Twelve years is enough time for him [Mr. Pinder] to stop the hemorrhaging,” Mr. Burrows said. “He came in, he saw and he did absolutely nothing. To date, we have other segments of the BPSU members in various crafts who are threatening to leave this once great organisation because of bad, poor leadership.
“Team Restoration represents the core of the collective disenchantment of our membership with our current executive team. It is absurd that after four terms there is widespread disillusionment and disappointment across the spectrum of this once dynamic organisation, which has historically been the pacesetter of bargaining units through the Caribbean. Team Restoration says enough is enough. It is past time to restore the dignity, dynamism and pride of the organisation.”
Among the issues Restoration has laid out in its agenda to be addressed include the establishment of a daycare facility for nursery and preschool aged children of working parents; establishment of scholarships for union members and their children and overhauling the executive structure of the BPSU to strengthen efficiency and improve the relationship with the public service.
Mr. Burrows will challenge Mr. Pinder for the top leadership post while Stephen Douglas will be a candidate for executive vice president.
Team Restoration’s other candidates include – Charlene Greene for vice president; Alexander Burrows, Jr. for Northern Region Vice President; Dwaine Stevens for Secretary General; Rosalind Miller for Treasurer; Tyrone Coakley, Julita Ingraham and Shantell Knowles –Trustees.
“This team has the depth of experience, knowledge, dedication and commitment to bring quality leadership and seriousness of purpose so badly needed to not only restore our beloved union to its once enviable position but to give it an impressive push to performance standards which will jolt the attention of our entire nation and make us the envy of the region.”
BPSU elections will take place sometime before September 30.
