The lawyer for a group of St. John’s College parents said her clients no longer want the school to host a graduation and prom for their children, instead they want to be paid for their “emotional distress.”

On Thursday, Ms. Galanos went back to the Supreme Court Registry to make some amendments to the originating summons filed last week as the parents are now seeking damages in lieu of the graduation.

About two weeks ago the Anglican Central Education Authority (ACEA) cancelled the 2013 class’ graduation and Emerald Ball after some of the students reportedly embarrassed the school through vulgar dancing caught on video.

The initial document filed was calling for the school host the graduation and prom, but now Ms. Galanos said now the parents want to be financially compensated for vexation, emotional distress, disappointment and discomfort.

Additionally she added that the parents are no longer interested in a graduation ceremony because “their desire for one has dwindled,” and added that a court ordered graduation might not turn out too well as there seems to still be some bad blood between the parents and their children and the St. John’s School board.

The ACEA has until July 15 to respond to the amended court papers.

Ms. Galanos said it is still too early to tell how much money each student would be reimbursed if the court rules in their favour.

Sources said it could be in the thousands of dollars for each family.

Since they do not want a graduation anymore the lawyer has advised her clients to pick up their high school diplomas from the school.
