Another police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law and was charged before the courts Wednesday.
Police Constable Derek Gittens, 28, of Lake View Road, Bozine Town was charged with two counts of causing grievous harm before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez.
The officer, who works in the Fire Department of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), is accused of stabbing two men –
Alfred McKenzie and Decaldo Pratt during an altercation at Arawak Cay early Monday morning.
In court Wednesday, Gittens pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecution did not object to bail and Gittens’ attorney Devard Francis told the court that his client who has worked on the RBPF for 10-years is not a flight risk and has an exemplary record.
Mr. Francis also told the court that since his client was about to be interdicted and placed on half pay, his finances would be strained.
During the proceedings, Gittens’ mother wept out loud while he stood before the court with tears in his eyes.
Neither of the men wounded in the incident appear to have suffered life threatening injuries. One of the men has been treated and discharged from hospital while the other remains detained in stable condition.
Chief Magistrate Gomez granted the officer $6,000 bail with one surety and instructed him to check in at the Carmichael Road Police Station every Saturday before 6:00 p.m.
The matter was adjourned to May 27 at 10:00a.m. in Court No. 10 when a trial date will be set.
