Senators voted unanimously in favour of Sharon Wilson becoming the president of the upper chamber during yesterday’s Opening of Parliament.

This is the second time Mrs. Wilson has served in that capacity; she first served as president of the senate from 2002 to 2007.

Mrs. Wilson was sworn in along with the 15 other members of the upper chamber during a brief session ahead of the Speech from the Throne.

Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate Desmond Bannister applauded Mrs. Wilson on her appointment.

“Those on this side supported your election and this brings a wonderful distinction as having served twice in this place in a capacity like this,” Mr. Bannister said. “We commend you for this – we know that fairness will be of the high road in this place. And as your former student, I am quite pleased to be able to congratulate and commend you.”

Following Mrs. Wilson’s election as president, senators then elected businessman Joseph Curry as vice president of the senate.

Government Leader in the Senate Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson congratulated Mr. Curry and welcomed the political newcomer to the upper chamber.

“Senator Curry, we note your considerable and distinguished career in public service to our country and your patriotism,” Mrs. Maynard-Gibson said. “You are of a high regard in which people not just in The Bahamas, but internationally hold you as well. It is only fitting at this stage of your illustrious career that you will be sitting in this chamber not only as a member, but in the very distinguished position as vice president. So let me say on behalf of all those on the government’s side – we welcome you.”

Following the swearing in of the senators and a brief sitting, the upper chamber was adjourned sine die.
