The Bahamas hosted and assumed chairmanship of the 13th Meeting of Commonwealth
Women’s Affairs Meeting (WAMM) which began on Monday.
The meeting was held at the Atlantis Resort under the theme, “Equality Toward a Common
Future.”
Spouse of the Prime Minister Anne Marie Davis, who is the main host of the WAMM side event,
expressed her passion for helping women and girls.
“I’ve been traveling to most of the other countries to attend a lot of these Commonwealth events,
she said ahead of the meeting. “So, because of my passion for women empowerment, gender
equality, and ending gender-based violence, because we are now, this country of The Bahamas is
now hosting the 13th Women Affairs Ministerial Meeting that our minister referred to.
“This will be a grand opportunity for The Bahamas, the spouse of The Bahamas, the Prime
Minister of Bahamas, to host this event in this country because we are seemed to be one of the
fighters out there for women empowerment, gender equality, ending gender-based violence,
climate control, everything that negatively affects women and girls and society as a whole.
“We have been seen to be in the fight for this globally and this is why they asked us to host a side
event.”
She went on to list the topics that were discussed during the three-day meeting.
“Substantively, issues such as violence against women and girls, women’s health, disability, the
experience of wages, wide ranges of high-level effects of women,” Mrs. Davis said.
“We will be examining a lot of the leadership issues as regards to economic empowerment,
leadership in politics, educational skills and development of mental health.
“And so all of these issues will be discussed by our panelists, which we will have that day.
“We’ll have experts on our panels, and we’ll be discussing everything related to women
empowerment and the leadership transformative leadership.”
Mrs. Davis said Bahamian women along with others across the 28 registered countries are
excited for the significant outcomes and agreements towards achieving equality for a common
future in the Commonwealth.
