A pair of police officers has been suspended following a video that went viral on social media, showing the officers swearing and consuming alcohol while on duty.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean confirmed to The Bahama Journal that disciplinary action has commenced against the two police officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force who were shown in the controversial video
“At 11 a.m. yesterday morning Commissioner Greenslade suspended both officers from duty and restricted their privileges,” a police report said.
“Both officers were given 14 days show cause letters. This allows due process and natural justice.
“Police Commissioner Greenslade will make a final decision on both officers once he receives their written responses in his hand.
A trusted source within the organization also confirmed that the duo was also detained in Police Quarter Guard at Police Headquarters.
In the nearly 30 second video, the officers are seen in what appears to be a patrol car in full police uniform.
Throughout the duration of the video, the officers used explicit language and are seen ignoring their patrol radio.
The video culminates with one of the officers consuming an alcoholic beverage while shouting out several expletives.
The video prompted general outrage on social media with many persons calling for the officers to be fired.
The conduct of law enforcement officials has been highlighted in recent weeks, thanks in large part to the arrest of nearly half a dozen former prison officers for drug related incidents.
National Security Minister Marvin Dames earlier this month said he is “concerned” about the number of law enforcement officers that have recently been taken before the courts on criminal charges, as he pledged to put a “greater focus” on “sifting out as many of the bad apples as possible” from the sector.
