When ‘Team Bahamas’ touches down at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) this evening, Chris Brown, Demetrius Pinder, Michael Mathieu and Ramon Miller now known as the ‘Fantastic Four,’ will receive a hero’s welcome.
The star athletes will arrive at LPIA’s VIP Lounge at 6:30 p.m.
Ahead of Team Bahamas’ arrival, Prime Minister Perry Christie released a press statement to commend the men’s 4 x 400 meters relay team.
“On behalf of the government and all people of The Bahamas and on my personal behalf, I extend my most enthusiastic congratulations to the winners of the gold medal in the men’s 4 x 400 meters relay held in London on Friday,” Mr. Christie said.
“This is a great day for The Bahamas. A proud nation stands at attention and salutes four of its finest sons. The magnificent quartet of Chris Brown, Demetrius Pinder, Michael Mathieu and Ramon Miller has done our nation proud.”
Competing against some of the world’s best athletes, the four men finished the men’s 4 x 400 meters relay in a national record time of 2 minutes 56:72.
The winning time is not only a new national record, but also positions The Bahamas as the third fastest nation to ever compete in that race.
Prime Minister Christie said the entire race from start to finish was a model of “discipline, precision teamwork and superlative execution.”
“These four men are role models whose discipline, fortitude, ability to work together and determination are truly awe inspiring and are a shining example to our entire nation,” he said.
While the 4 x 400 relay event was the only competition in which the country won a medal, the government has expressed its pride and appreciation for the overall performance of Team Bahamas.
Free National Movement (FNM) Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis also expressed his party’s pride in the efforts of the ‘Fantastic Four’ and Team Bahamas.
“In this victory our young men have now made a statement to the world, but also to other young Bahamian men, that with hard work, dedication and a positive attitude anything is possible,” Dr. Minnis said.
“I congratulate the entire Bahamian Olympic team, athletes, coaches, trainers, family members and supporters of their sterling efforts and honourable representation of our country.”
