A Freeport Container Port (FCP) worker has died following an industrial accident.

The victim, Lester Smith, was operating a straddle carrier when it overturned Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

The father of four was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital where he died.

He suffered extensive internal injuries.

Smith, who had been on the job for more than a decade, was moving containers at the time.

His death is the second time in recent years that employees of FCP have died while on the job.

In March 2010, three employees were killed and several others injured after a tornado touched down at the transshipment site on Grand Bahama.

Several employees were performing repairs on a crane when the tornado hit and sent the crane and some of the employees tumbling into nearby waters.

FCP was not held liable in either instance.

The company put out a brief statement late Wednesday about this latest incident.

“We sympathise deeply with the family and our colleagues, and we offer our deepest condolences to all who mourn the loss of Lester ‘Ching’ Smith,” the statement read.

The Freeport Container Port is approximately 65 miles from Florida and it serves as a natural transshipment hub for the eastern seaboard of the Americas and the principal east-west line haul routes through the region.
