Lightbourn’s Speech Causes Backlash

LightbourneSo far the 2016 FNM General Convention has been drama filled to say the least.

Ranging from delegates being split in support of Dr. Hubert Minnis and Long Island MP Loretta Butler-Turner to Former FNM Chairman Darren Cash saying that the convention has been “stained” by underhanded dealings by the incumbent leadership

However all this fails in comparison to comments made by Montagu MP Richard Lightbourne, who claimed that, a possible deterrent to the country’s economic problems could be unwed single mothers getting their tubes tied.

“We should consider following the lead of several countries in the world which results in unwed mothers getting their tubes tied after having more than two children.

“This would result in fewer children being born.

“The state shouldn’t have to pay for the upbringing of children.

“By adopting such measures there will be fewer classrooms needed in the future.

“Less persons coming out of school each year seeking employment.

“This would result in the mother of these children having an opportunity to live a better life, not having to bring up so many children,” Mr. Lightbourne said

Lightbourne’s comments ignited a fire storm on social media, with many persons being outraged at what he said.

It was also evident that Mr. Lightbourne’s comments did not sit well with persons in the room, added to the fact he was several minutes overtime many of the persons in the crowd urged him to remove himself from the stage.

The commentary prompted FNM Chairman Sidney Collie to issue a response to Mr. Lightbourne’s remarks.

Mr. Collie distancing himself away from Lightbourne’s statement, adding that his views are not a reflection of the entire party.

“Mr. Lightbourn’s comments tonight were personal and do not reflect the position of the FNM.

The FNM does not believe in restricting anyone’s rights including women’s reproductive rights. The FNM has and will continue to fight for all Bahamians, regardless of gender,” Mr. Collie said

The Montagu MP who is one the “Dissident Six” declined to be interviewed for comment.

The FMN General Convention continues tonight.
