Acting Court of Appeal President Justice Christopher Blackman raked a prosecutor over coals yesterday, for being ill prepared for court and ultimately causing the adjournment of a case.
Prosecutor Uel Johsnon’s lack of preparedness cost murder convict Foster Knowles’ appeal hearing to be adjourned to next week.
Knowles was appealing his conviction for possession of an unlicensed firearm and escaping lawful custody.
He was sentenced in the lower court to three-and-a-half years for the first charge and 12 months for the latter.
Justice Blackman asked the prosecutor when the case happened, but he could not say with certainty.
The prosecutor’s unpreparedness did not sit well with the justices.
In fact, Justice Blackman called it a nuisance and disgrace.
The prosecutor told the court that he had requested the documents, but to date had not received any.
Justice Blackman reminded the prosecutor of the five Ps – proper preparation prevents poor performance, but he said in this case it was just piss poor performance and a waste of the court’s time.
He then adjourned the matter until May 24.
Murder convict Andre Dieufuste also appeared before the panel to appeal his murder conviction.
However, he had no legal representation and was assigned counsel.
His matter was adjourned to July 3.
