Leader of The Opposition Dr. Hubert Minnis officially launched his campaign for leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) under the slogan “Roc with Doc”.
Dr. Minnis’ launch of his campaign comes just a day after FNM senator Dr. Duane Sands announced that he would be campaigning for the seat of deputy leader under the leadership of Long Island MP Loretta Butler-Turner.
“We are now preparing for a convention, I will enter as FNM leader and I will emerge as FNM leader,” he said.
“The delegates will Roc with Doc.”
“It is truly a time for The Bahamas to Roc with Doc and the FNM.”
Yesterday during an episode of Love 97’s Issues of the Day, many callers voiced that they believe the Butler-Turner/Sands combo will not be the right choice as they represent elitism and the establishment.
Dr. Sands said when a person is labeled as elite he wanted to know on what basis.
“When you label someone as elite, I want to know on what basis do you come up with that,” he said.
“My family hailed from Freetown lane in Grants Town, so how did I get elite? The Butler family is salt to the earth regular Bahamians who built themselves up on the basis of the funeral business.”
“I don’t know where this term elite comes from. It is a wonderful cliché to try and discredit someone but it certainly doesn’t apply to me.”
Just last month, six MPs of the FNM put fire under Dr. Minnis to hold an early convention.
Of that bunch was Mrs. Butler-Turner.
The group threatened that if Dr. Minnis did not hold an early convention as opposed to the usual November convention, the governor general would be called on to remove him from his position as leader of the opposition in Parliament.
The convention is set for July 27-30.
