Did you know that more people on earth have cell phones than drinking water? This was just one of the water facts that a group of 26 fifth-grade students learned at Columbus Primary when Water and Sewerage (WSC) stopped by to give them valuable lessons on water conservation.
As WSC makes significant improvements to their water services, they’re also reaching out to local students in New Providence to teach them how important it is to treasure this resource.
During the hour-long presentation students learned how much water we humans use in our everyday lives and small steps we can all take to reduce our water consumption, like turning the water off while brushing your teeth and turning off the faucet while washing dishes.
“It is a pleasure to educate the children of The Bahamas on the importance of water conservation,” noted Chrisnor Stuart, Public Relations and Marketing representative at WSC. “Children play an important role in making sure that every water drop counts and there are simple things they can do to help their family save water. If everyone saves a little we will be able to save a lot.”
In addition to learning about water conservation, the students watched videos on the reverse osmosis system that WSC uses to provide water in Nassau and how city water is less prone to contaminants than well water.
The students eagerly absorbed the information and all pledged to do their part in helping to conserve water.
“The lesson on water conservation was very enriching for the kids,” noted Latia Johnson, science teacher at Columbus Primary School. “The lesson incorporated things we have learned in the classroom so it reinforced our messages plus we learned water tips that we all need to know.”
WSC was the recipient of an IDB loan to make improvements to their water services, and thus far have been very successful in reducing the amount of non-revenue water and in providing better water throughout the capital.
The IDB loan is also helping WSC to rebrand themselves and this is a part of their rebranding efforts.
