An accident on the construction site at Baha Mar has claimed the life of a Bahamian male employee.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean said police received reports yesterday of a fatal incident at Baha Mar around 11:30 a.m.
“We cannot classify this incident as yet so we are interviewing persons. We are working hand- in-hand with persons at Baha Mar and I’m sure that as the information unfolds we will be able to give a more comprehensive and detailed report,” he said.
Baha Mar’s Vice President of External Affairs Robert Sands had very little to say about the incident.
He informed The Bahama Journal that he will allow police to carry out a thorough investigation before commenting on the incident.
However, he did express condolences to the family of the deceased.
“We are very satisfied as to the safety procedures on site. This is a most unfortunate event and our sympathy goes out to the family of the bereaved,” said Mr. Sands.
According to Mr. Sands, this is not the first death to occur on the site, which included persons of Chinese decent.
He noted that during the beginning phase of construction, the first person died as a result of natural causes and the second person succumbed to an injury received while on site.
This is the latest setback for the resort, which was originally scheduled to open last December.
However, that date was eventually changed to March. But recently Baha Mar’s opening has been delayed until May or early summer.
