Police have arrested and are questioning three suspects in connection with the shooting of Sergeant Andrew Sweeting, bodyguard to Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis.
According to police reports the suspects ages 36, 23 and 18 were arrested after noon Monday.
They are all believed to be residents of Nassau Village.
It was just before 10:00 a.m. Monday when police reported that Sgt. Sweeting was in a residential area just behind the Prince Charles Shopping Centre, standing by his car when two gunmen approached him attempting to rob him.
When he tried to withdraw his service weapon, according to reports, it was then the culprits fired shots hitting him to the abdomen and left palm.
Sgt. Sweeting, an officer with more than 15 years of experience, remains in hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
Deputy Prime Minister Davis who was out of town when the shooting incident happened is now back in the country and on Tuesday said he has seen and spoken to Sgt. Sweeting.
He gave reporters an update on how his recovery is progressing.
“He’s in good spirits and he’s going to be well,” he added. “His injuries are not life threatening and I thank God he is still with us today.”
The DPM said the fact that his aide was shot proves that no one is safe in this country.
Since the incident, some have questioned why Sgt. Sweeting was on duty if the DPM was out of town.
Mr. Davis addressed that issue and said despite the incident Sgt. Sweeting is keeping positive.
“I was out of the country and another police aide was travelling with me and he was at home readying the vehicle to get us from the airport,” he said. “He was cleaning the car to come to collect us when the incident happened.
“When I saw him he was ready to get out of bed to come to work. He’s in good spirits he’s just recovering from the exploratory surgeries he had to his stomach and to correct the issues he had with his hand which was shot through.”
