The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) has 900 body cameras to date and is expecting 300
more according to Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles.
Commissioner Knowles said this initiative is a top priority for the RBPF as it is their aim to
outfit all frontline officers with body cameras to monitor their interactions with civilians.
With several officers facing charges and allegations of misconduct over the past few years the
Police Force is making a special effort to increase accountability and transparency on the force.
Knowles indicated that this development is a step in the right direction as all interactions with
civilians will be recorded and can be reviewed for reference.
Also providing further information was Assistant Commissioner of Police Zhivargo Dames.
According to ACP Dames the remaining cameras may arrive within the next 90 days and will
also be deployed within that time frame as well.
Furthermore, commissioner Knowles noted that police ethics training for officers already on
the job has commenced and daily sessions are being held.
She said this is all in effort to achieve her previously established goals as the force’s newly
appointed commissioner, which in short was to restore the integrity of the force.
Knowles believes that through these initiatives the RBPF will improve its transparency, and
regain the public’s trust while ensuring that officers are fully-equipped with the tools and skills
to complete their jobs effectively.
