Police arrested two men and seized $1.7 million worth of marijuana near Ragged Island last Wednesday.
Two New Providence men – 51 and 48 – are in custody.
Authorities in Exuma, the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s (RBPF) Marine Support Unit and United States officials went to Rick Cay in the Ragged Island area, where they found 76 large packages of suspected marijuana.
The two suspects were arrested right on the scene and have since been brought to New Providence.
The drugs weighed 1,698 pounds and have an estimated street value of just under $1.7 million.
Police also seized more than $10,000 of drugs in Grand Bahama.
Officers, using a search warrant, searched a National Gardens Subdivision home.
Police said they found brown and white taped packages containing suspected marijuana.
A 34-year-old woman who lives in the home was arrested.
The drugs weighed 12 pounds and have an estimated street value of $12,000.
Drug Enforcement Unit (DEUC) Head Superintendent Samuel Butler told the Bahama Journal recently that his unit has gotten regular tip offs from the public.
Up to the first quarter this year, the unit took in just over 770 pounds of cocaine, according to drug statistics.
That number is now up to over 1,500 pounds of cocaine.
According to statistics, just over 4,000 pounds of marijuana were seized up to April this year.
That number now stands at over 6,000 pounds.
These numbers, however, do not take these latest drug busts from Ragged Island and Grand Bahama.
