The prime minister lashed back at the critics who claim Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has the government in his back pocket.
Prime Minister Perry Christie last night at the National Training Agency Launch quickly debunked claims that Peter Nygard is using the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government to pass stem cell legislation.
Last Friday, at a luncheon the prime minister spoke of how Mr. Nygard was assisting the government in bringing skilled professionals to the country to help with the stem cell research.
However, those statements came under harsh criticism especially after a video surfaced online of newly elected PLP cabinet ministers attending a party at Nygard Cay.
Members of the Opposition immediately called for the resignation of these ministers.
But last evening the prime minister said the Opposition should be the last group of people calling for resignation over Mr. Nygard.
“I can’t wait until I go to the House of Assembly on Wednesday for the stem cell debate,” he said.
“I hear they (FNM) were saying that Nygard caused me to bring the stem cell legislation. But I’m going to tell them.”
“I want them to tell me about all those FNM politicians who be around Nygard’s house. That’s what they should be telling me about. Yet they want my ministers to resign?”
He said The Bahamas is a beautiful place, but that a part of the political game is to cause distraction, which he said is all the Opposition is doing.
The House of Assembly resumes on Wednesday for a continuation of the debate.
