A Royal Bahamas Defence Force base will be established on Ragged Island, according to Prime Minister Perry Christie.
“The government of The Bahamas will be establishing a defence force base on Ragged Island that will institutionalize the circulation of more money in that community and lead therefore in my own view, an expansion of that economy in Ragged Island where people will see in growing numbers how very beautiful Ragged Island and its keys are and as a source of investment,” Mr. Christie said.
The prime minister’s announcement came on Monday during the Class “C” Boat Show hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources at Potter’s Cay Dock.
At the boat show spectators gathered to honour well-known boat captain and sloop sailing pioneer Captain Emmet Munroe.
Prime Minister Christie, who was present to deliver a keynote address, took the opportunity to make a special announcement to residents from Captain Munroe’s hometown, Ragged Island.
Prime Minister Christie and Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources V. Alfred Gray both touted Captain Munroe’s accomplishments.
The prime minister noted that the inaugural event is just the start of many more as there are lots more persons in the country to be recognized for their accomplishments in boating.
“This is just a work in progress, our being able to recognize men and women who have given much in the service of their country,” Mr. Christie said.
