Dr. Butler Discusses Cancer With Sandals Staff

Oncologist, Dr. Raleigh Butler told Sandals female team members that cervical cancer was curable if it was diagnosed and treated during the early stage. Dr. Butler, the featured speaker at a cervical cancer seminar at the resort informed the group that it takes about ten years for the cancer to become advanced. "It grows slowly and takes long to spread. This is why it is important that women have annual pap smears.

Cervical cancer is one hundred percent curable."

Dr. Butler cited laser and operation among the methods used to treat cervical cancer. Asked if there were any symptoms associated with cervical cancer; he noted that women should beware of bleeding after intercourse, abnormal discharge and change in bowel movements. "These

are signs that you need to see a physician immediately."

Among the goals and objectives that he would like to see in place to assist women in their fight against cervical cancer are a national screening program; expansion of present program; education and training of medical personnel; public awareness, removal of myths and fears and more volunteers. Dr. Butler said it is disheartening for him to see young women die of cervical cancer due to lack of knowledge about the disease. "It takes a commitment from you to realize that your health is important and preventive care can save lives."

Briefly discussing breast cancer, Dr. Butler said annual mammograms and monthly self examinations were very important. "Many women discover a lump in their breast during self examination." He encouraged the women to take better care of themselves and the men to ensure that their spouses visit the doctor at least once a year.

Tips Dr. Butler gave for better health were: choose to be a non-smoker, limit alcohol; maintain healthy body weight and choose a variety of low fat, high fiber foods.
