Noted Local Surgeon Elected To Society Of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons

Doctors Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer and well respected local surgeon Dr. Charles W. Diggiss has been elected to membership in the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), as announced by SAGES President, Dr. Daniel J. Deziel.

SAGES, founded in 1981, foster, promote, supports and encourages academic, clinical and research achievement in gastrointestinal endoscopic surgery. SAGES’ members, some 5,000 from every state in the United States of America as well as 68 foreign countries include general surgeons, colorectal surgeons, and osteopathic surgeons who perform endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical procedures as part of their practice. Membership is open to board-certified surgeons who have demonstrated experience and proficiency in gastrointestinal endoscopic surgery.

The Society establishes standards of minimal access surgical training and practice, and has developed guidelines for training, clinical applications, and privileging in laparoscopic surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Dr. Diggiss, a highly accomplished surgeon, completed pre-med and medical school at the University of the West Indies and completed his surgical training and qualifying with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, Scotland. Dr. Diggiss is the CEO of the Med-Net Group of Companies and also serves on the Board of Directors for Doctors Hospital.

A pioneer in endoscopic surgery in the Bahamas, Dr. Diggiss introduced laparoscopy in General surgery to the Bahamas in 1993. Surgical laparoscopy is performed through a scope with a digital video camera and has dramatically changed the way surgery is performed. Surgeons can now do major operations through tiny incisions, passing tiny surgical instruments through the arthroscope, endoscope, or laparoscope. The benefits to patients are shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery saving patients time and money.

The Board of Directors, Executive Management Team, Coordinators, Associates, physicians and volunteers of Doctors Hospital extend sincere congratulations to Dr. Diggiss on this achievement.
