FNM Says PLP Senator’s Comments “Unwarranted”

By Staff Writer
The Free National Movement (FNM) has blasted Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Senator Dr. Michael Darville for remarks he made in the Senate about Chinese investments in Grand Bahama and human rights in China.

The FNM said the comments were simply "unwarranted."

"The FNM does not agree with Senator Darville in his portrayal of the Chinese Government’s human rights record and we advise him to take another look around the world before indulging in such excessive and hostile language against a friendly state," a press statement from the party said.

The FNM said the government has just recently witnessed how intemperate and ill-considered remarks by a political leader can lead to undesirable consequences.

"We can only hope that this outburst by Senator Darville does not adversely impact delicate negotiations that are at this very time in progress and which, if successfully concluded, will be of considerable benefit to the Bahamian economy and thousands of Bahamian workers and entrepreneurs," the statement said.

"The FNM is appreciative of Chinese investment in our country, not only in Freeport but also, we hope, in New Providence. We believe this investment is and will continue to be to the benefit of The Bahamas and the Bahamian people."

The statement added that the government and people of The Bahamas also appreciate the "concrete demonstration of friendship" on the part of the Chinese government and its people.

The Chinese government recently donated a modern national sports stadium to The Bahamas.

"It is interesting to observe how members of the Opposition talk out of both sides of their mouths in order to score cheap political points, regardless of the consequences to the nation. At their recent convention they sought to take credit for the sports stadium," the statement said.

"We should like to remind them that it was the FNM Government that had the foresight and courage to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. Just before we came to office in 1992 the PLP was planning to send an ambassador to Taiwan."
