Man Charged With Raping Ex-Girlfriend

By IANTHIA SMITH
A 48-year-old Gambier Village resident accused of detaining and raping his 18-year-old girlfriend was charged in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

According to court dockets, Lincoln Poitier forcibly detained and raped the Malcolm Road woman between June 17, 2009 and June 19, 2009.

Poitier pleaded not guilty to the detention charge, but was not required to enter a plea to the rape charge.

Poitier, who was shackled by his hands and feet, appeared before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez on Wednesday.

Visibly in pain and struggling to stand on his feet, Poitier told the court that he does not understand why such charges were being lodged against him. He said the alleged victim is his live-in girlfriend with whom he has a six-month old baby boy.

According to police statements, the woman admitted that she and Poitier had a relationship, but she said they broke up in early June.

She further claimed that on the day in question, she was standing at a bus stop near the Original Swiss Sweet Shop on West Bay Street, when Poitier forced her into his black Ford Focus, which was allegedly driven by his nephew, referred to only as "Danny."

She further alleged that the driver then drove to a dirt road off Windsor Field in the area of Tropical Gardens.

She said that is when Poitier started to beat her about the body and sexually assault her.

She told police officers that they then drove away and picked up another one of Poitier’s nephews, known as "Kadero."

She said they then drove to the Carmichael Road area where the accused forced her to write a letter to her son’s nursery stating that she was working late and to instruct caregivers to give the child to her boyfriend.

She then told police that Poitier and his nephews picked up her son from the nursery, as she sat in the car and waited.

She said they drove back to the house where Poitier raped her on three different occasions between June 17 and June 19.

She said she managed to convince Poitier that she wanted to get back in a relationship with him just so he could let her go. The woman said he agreed and dropped her to work around 8:00 a.m. on June 19, but said he refused to take the baby to the nursery.

According to the police report, Dr. Govindaraju Ramaraju examined the girl and noted that her hymen was not intact and noted that she had bruising on the right leg.

Prosecutor Sean Thurston objected to bail and said Poitier has a long criminal record, including robbery, burglary, possession of firearms and housebreaking.

He noted that Poitier is also out on bail for a similar rape case and said that matter is still before the Supreme Court.

Poitier was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison and is scheduled to return to court on July 7.
