Glinton Gets Death Penalty

Supreme Court Justice Jon Isaacs on Wednesday sentenced Jamal Glinton to death for killing businessman Keith Carey three years ago. This is the latest death sentence to be handed down since the Privy Council abolished the mandatory death penalty.

The sentence also signaled a big victory for the Attorney General’s Office, which had been pushing for Glinton to receive capital punishment after he was convicted.

The sentence was handed down shortly after 2:00 p.m.

Glinton was convicted in April of murdering Carey on February 27, 2006, as well as conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery.

In addition to the death sentence, Glinton was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiracy to commit robbery and 30 years for armed robbery, which will take effect from March 2009 and will run concurrently.

Justice Isaacs said he based his sentence on the fact that Carey was defenseless and a productive member of the community. He also said there was a lack of remorse on Glinton’s part and called the killing "truly barbaric."

Testimony in the case revealed that Carey was gunned down just as he was about to make a $40,000 deposit at the Bank of the Bahamas on Tonique Williams-Darling Highway.

Lead prosecutor in the case, Cheryl Grant-Bethel told the Journal that she was pleased with the outcome of the case.

"I think that the decision of the judge was a fair one [Wednesday] having regard to the circumstances," she said. "For the family, the wife was asking for closure and the mother was asking for a just sentence and I believe that they can finally put an end to those horrific events of that day."

"On behalf of the family and the society I believe the right sentence was given."

Still overcome with emotion, Carey’s brother and wife, Bill and Michelle Carey spoke to the Journal when court adjourned.

"We are pleased that it is over and with the overall outcome," Mr. Carey said. "We just hope that the boy gets his soul together before the sentence is carried out."

Meantime, Glinton’s attorney, Craig Butler said he did not agree with Justice Isaacs’ decision.

He called the death sentence harsh and made comparisons to Ian Hutchinson’s case.

Hutchinson was convicted on October 25, 2005 of murdering softball superstar Jackie "Lil Stunt" Moxey and sentenced to life in prison. The sentence, which was being appealed, was recently upheld by the Court of Appeal last week.

"I will admit that both crimes [committed by Hutchinson and Glinton] were heinous crimes but I do not know that the death sentence is one that is going to deter or cause a drop in the level of crime," Mr. Butler said.

"It is a shame and again all of my sympathies go out to the Carey family, but I cannot agree with the imposition of death penalty in this matter."

Mr. Butler said he now has to advise Glinton’s family of its legal options, as family members were not present in court.

"The family will now be advised of what the circumstances are," he said. "There is a limited window of opportunity in case they do want to appeal and that is something they are going to have to come together as a family and decide."

Glinton’s co-accused, Sean Brown and Dwight Knowles, were sentenced on April 9 for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

They received 10 and 11 years respectively on each count.
