Sports/Tourism At Its Best

The sports/tourism route is wide open and waiting for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Presently going on in Montague Bay and hosted by the Nassau Yacht Club, is the 2008 5.5 Metre Regatta. It's a sailing triple play that includes the Scandinavian Gold Cup Series, the Duke of Edinburgh Classic and the World Championships. The third segment of the water sports extravaganza, the championships, got underway on Monday and will conclude on March 14.
The Bahamas Sailing Association and the Nassau Yacht Club are to be congratulated for bringing this most spectacular sports event to the country. It would appear that the Government of The Bahamas recognized the importance of the event. The central administrators certainly must have because they ensured that nice cheques were provided the Organizing Committee by both the Sports Ministry and the Ministry of Tourism.
Hopefully the concept has sunk into the heads of our political leaders.
The sporting family of the nation has observed the governmental attention paid to the 5.5 Metre Regatta. There is indeed much satisfaction within the country's sports landscape. There is enthusiasm that a sister sports discipline, sailing, has gotten the kind of assistance to appropriately showcase such a blockbuster event.
In essence, The Bahamas through the regatta is on the world stage. Through its very efficient website, the Organizing Committee sends out the much-anticipated information about the regatta to all corners of the world.
It's a marketing bonanza for The Bahamas.
Yes, Sports/Tourism is big.
Now, sports leaders throughout the land are chomping at the bit and connecting with their regional and international colleagues with new conviction that this government through its sports and tourism ministries are ready to play ball and maximize the sports/tourism opportunity.
The 5.5 Metre Regatta is a prime example of what sports/tourism is all about.
People love to visit The Bahamas. Local sports leaders sitting around regional and international sports table are always asked about hosting events. I would like to think that this government, particularly because of the grand assistance given sailing, has ushered in a comfortable climate for other sports disciplines to bid for major events or to accept standing invitations.
The hosting of sporting competitions is just one of two prime avenues through which sports/tourism can bring great dividends to the country.
Sports conventions could abound in The Bahamas as well.
It's really a win-win situation for the country in general and sports in particular. A sports/tourism concentration will boost the tourism figures and the nation's economy.
Once again, we've been presented with clear-cut example of the sports/tourism potential in the nation.
Let's see what happens.
