Climate Change and US

We call her Mother Earth. Why? Maybe it is because some of her behaviour reminds us of the female of our gender. Presently Mother Earth is undergoing great change, yes climate change. One manifestations of this phenomenon is heat generation. It is getting hotter.

The United Nations agencies have been monitoring the situation. A report was issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the state of planetary warming. The report stated that the warming of the climate system is unequivocal. There is evidence that humans have been culprits in all of this. It all stems from the fact that the atmosphere has been overloaded with carbon dioxide (CO2) which has resulted in the retaining of solar heat which would have dissipated.Reducing the levels of CO2 is a major part of the answer; there are other initiatives which have to be considered like moving to higher ground in order to avoid flood prone areas. Is that all? No.

We live in The Bahamas where our population is relatively small, just over 325,000. We have no major industries which spew carbon into the atmosphere. Yes, we do have close to 150,000 vehicles, thousands of which would fail emissions standards of countries where emissions are monitored and standards enforced. We also have islands which are low lying and susceptible to flooding. There are large acreages of wet lands, particularly in Andros. We are an archipelagic nations where coastlines could disapppear as a result rising sea levels. The Bahamas is vulnerable to the vagaries of Climate Change.
