Fountain and Russell Reach Doubles Gold Medal Round-CAC Tennis

The women’s doubles team of Nikita Fountain and Larika Russell will play for the gold medal today at the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
The women’s doubles team of Nikita Fountain and Larika Russell will play for the gold medal today at the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
On Thursday in the semi-final the Bahamian duo defeated the second seeded team of Mariana Muci and Andrea Gamil from Venezuela 6-4 and 6-4 to advance to the championship match where they will face Daysi Epinal and Francesca Segarelli from the Dominican Republic for the gold medal.
Meanwhile, the unseeded Russell continues to play well in the women’s singles competition and forced her way into the semi-finals where she is now guaranteed at least the bronze medal.
After her quarter-final match versus Francesca Segarelli from the Dominican Republic was rescheduled because of rain on Wednesday, Thursday she won in straight sets after breaking the will of her opponent with a tough 7-5 win in the opening set complimented by a dominant 6-2 victory in the second set to claim the match. She plays in the semi-finals today at 9am versus #3 seed Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.
The question arose, did a rain delay on Wednesday during the third set tie break of the mixed doubles competition cost Rodney Carey Jr. and Kerrie Cartwright to lose their quarterfinal match when played resumed Thursday morning? No one can really tell.
Carey and Cartwright won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 3-6 to Jose Hernandez and Chandra Capozzi from the Dominican Republic on Wednesday when rain hampered much of the competition.
Carey and Cartwright were leading 4-3 in the third set tie break when rain stopped play forcing the match to carry over to Thursday morning. When play resumed, the Dominicans pounced on the Bahamian duo and won the set 10-7 to secure a spot in the semi-finals for at least a bronze medal.
In the men’s doubles competition on Thursday Devin Mulings and Marvin Rolle got off to a great start against Piero Luisi and Jose DeArmas from Venezuela before losing their semi-final match in three sets 6-4, 4-6 and 3-10. Mullings and Rolle accepted the bronze medal.
