The 2009-2010 season in the New Providence Women's Basketball Association (NPWBA) will continue tonight at the DW Davis Gym, after opening the series with two blow out games at the Kendal Isaacs Gym On Saturday night.
The Bomber George Angels lost the NPWBA championship series to the Johnson Lady Truckers earlier this year and had to spend most of the summer with a bitter taste in their mouth. It was the fourth consecutive title for the Truckers.
On Saturday night the Angels sent a early clear message to the Truckers that they are seeking complete revenge this season.
In the feature game on opening night, the Angels led by veteran shooting guard Suzette McKenzie ran the Truckers out of the gym and beat them 80-61. McKenzie finished with a game high 21 points. Sherrel Cash dropped in 15 for the Angels.
Shantelle Rolle led the sluggish Truckers with 19 and veteran speedster Glenda Gilcud had 18 in the loss. However, slow starts are not unusual for the Truckers who know how to turn up their level of play when it matters most, like the Softball National Champion Commando Security Truckers, and the Pineapple Air Wildcats.
The Truckers and the Angels will meet at least three more times during the regular season. It would be interesting to see if the embarrassing loss will cause the Truckers to snap back into top form sooner than they usually do.
In the opening game, the Electro Telecom Queens under second year Head Coach Simone Beneby, looking to challenge for a title this year after making the playoffs in their first year, was slapped with a dose of reality when the Sunshine Auto Cheetahs pushed them around in a 74-47 skunk.
The Queens know it will not be easy to take down any of the three top teams in the
league this year, and will most likely chalk up the opening loss as experience and use it for motivation.
They will have to bring the fire every night as the College Of The Bahamas Lady Caribs and the Junior All-Stars are expected to be improved teams this year.
In the victory for the Cheetahs Audrey Martin led with 18 points and Anastacia Moultrie had 17. In the loss, one of the Queens biggest off-season acquisitions Christine Sinclair finished with a game high 24 points.
During halftime of the first game, The NPSA honoured some of its former players and administrators including Andrea Knowles, Jackie Bethel, Helen Archer, Andrea Burton (Grand Bahama), Angela Green, Hattie Moxey, Flo Rolle, Fianza Rolle, Angela Green-Sawyer, Barbara Delaney, Beryl Brown, Beryl Eve (Foxhill/USA), Ernestine Butler-Sands, Dr. Linda Davis, Diane Sands, Denise McKay-Gordon, Betty Cole, Bonnie Turnquest-Culmer, Celestine Wilson-Albury, Debbie Campbell, Dawn Knowles, Daisy Walker, Cynthia Dummet, Denise Moss-Beard, Cynthia Pratt, Cordell Thompson, and Charlene Smith.
