PLP Elections Today

Hundreds of Progressive Liberal Party delegates are expected to head to the polls today after all of the persons vying for the three top posts at the party’s 51st convention were nominated on Wednesday at the Wyndham Nassau Resort.
Hundreds of Progressive Liberal Party delegates are expected to head to the polls today after all of the persons vying for the three top posts at the party’s 51st convention were nominated on Wednesday at the Wyndham Nassau Resort.
Delegates crowded the resort on Cable Beach to show support for the candidate of their choice as the highly-anticipated convention got underway.
The delegates were locked in closed morning sessions as they heard the opening address from West End and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe and a report on the party from PLP chairman Glenys Hanna-Martin
At about 5:00 p.m., it was announced that incumbent leader Perry Christie was nominated for the top post along with his challengers Bain and Grant’s Town MP Dr. Bernard Nottage and political newcomer Paul Moss.
Fox Hill MP Fred Mitchell was also nominated for the position but declined the nomination.
The deputy leader post is also up for grabs. This came after St. Cecila MP Cynthia “Mother” Pratt announced earlier this year that she would not seek re-election.
Nominated for that position were Cat Island, San Salvador and Rum Cay MP Philip “Brave” Davis; West End and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe and PLP Senator Jerome Fitzgerald.
Another hotly contested post is the chairman position. Incumbent Glenys Hanna-Martin, who intends to keep that post, was nominated.
However, so were her contesters attorney Kenred Dorsett, former Mount Moriah MP Keod Smith and former chairman Bradley Roberts.
Also nominated unopposed was Alex Storr for deputy chairman and Dorris Burrows for trustee.
When The Bahama Journal spoke with some of the candidates at the Wyndham many of them seemed confident of a victory.
“I feel extremely confident,” said Mr. Davis. “The number of delegates who are showing their support for me is overwhelming that inspires my confidence. That shows that after elections and voting and the counts I will be the next deputy leader of this great party.”
His opponent, Mr. Fitzgerald, shared similar sentiments.
“We have all been really engaged in the deputy race and you are going to see a lot of excitement coming out of this. It is the biggest convention in the history of the Progressive Liberal Party. So it shows that there is a lot who are interested in it. I think we are going to come out of it ready for what is ahead,” he said.
Incumbent leader Perry Christie also felt sure of his place in the party.
“For myself, I am confident going into the elections,” he said. “The supporters of the Progressive Liberal Party will return me. I am looking forward to that event and to fulfill the purpose of a political party. That is not to have glorious fights within, but to prepare the Bahamian people and to demonstrate that we are a very, very, very attractive alternative to the FNM.”
Voting is expected to begin at 12:00 p.m.
