Major 'Pain' Top 15 Lightweight In The World

It won't be easy but Meacher Major 'Pain' is one or two victories away from a shot at the lightweight world title belt according to his promoter Nick Garone head of Excel World Wide Promotions based in New York.
And even though to date the New York Boxing Commission has not issued a ruling on the NABA title fight between Major and Michael 'Cold Blood' Clarke Garone believes the publicity surrounding the controversial decision has been good for Major and his chances for a shot at the world title.
In the June 19th fight against Clark in Buffalo the referee stopped the fight after Major had scored what seemed like a knockout and claimed that Major delivered an illegal blow to the back of Clarke's head, and as a result Clarke could not continue the fight.
Judges ruled the fight a no contest to the dismay of the fans and Major's camp. They appealed the decision and are still waiting on a response from the New York Boxing Commission.
A victory in that fight could have propelled Major (15-3) to the top 10 in the world rankings. The latest official rankings released by the World Boxing Association based on results from June 5th to July 23, has Major ranked 15th in the world in the lightweight (135lbs/61.23Kgs) division.
Garone said the NY Commission was suppose to send him a notice on their decision in the Clarke fight late last week, but he did not hear from them and is expecting to get word from them sometime this week.
"But you know what, the
good thing about it is, no matter what the outcome of that fight the whole world saw what happened and they saw that he legitimately knocked this guy out, and that is why he is ranked among the top 15 in the world right now. And Clarke is a two-time former world title challenger," said Garone.
Urbano Antillon from Mexico is ranked as the number one challenger to the champion, followed by Joan Guzman from the Dominican Republic second and Miguel Acosta from Venezuela rounding off the top three.
Currently Paulus Moses from Namibia who is undefeated at 25-0-0 with 17 knockouts, is the current World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight world champion.
He fought against the WBA Lightweight champion Yusuke Kobori, and won the fight by points, and became the new world champion in Yokohama City in Japan on January 3, 2009. He defended that title this past weekend on Saturday July 25, by unanimous decision over Takehiro Shimada.
Garone said a lot of times people won't sign somebody with three loses but after seeing Major and speaking with him several times on the phone he realized that he had a "guy with a lot of talent that lacked direction and didn't have anybody steering his career." He signed Major earlier this year.
"Those loses that Meacher had are now actually becoming a blessing to us because what is going to happen is guys will be more apt to fight someone with three loses than they would an undefeated guy, and that opens up opportunities for Meacher," said Garone.
Through his new Bahamian based promotions company Major and his camp are trying to host a boxing show in New Providence at the end of August where Major would have a very tough fight on his hands no matter who the opponent is.
Garone said they are looking at a couple of different opponents for Major including a possible show down with Freddy Norwood a two-time World Champion, but nothing is confirmed yet.
A victory over Norwood or another opponent of high calibre would propel Major to the top 10 and possibly next in line for a world title shot.
According to Garone the August show is not yet confirmed because they are waiting for a few sponsors to come through but he did say it "looks pretty good and it seems like its going to happen, but I can't make any official announcement until we actually have the funding secured," he said.
Major has been in The Bahamas for the past four weeks. Garone says he has no concerns about that.
"One of the things that I really appreciate about Meacher is that he is very dedicated to the cause,” said Garone.
“I’m out here making sure that I do everything business wise to get him opportunities, and his job is to make sure that he stays in camp and in shape, and since I have been with him he has done that, he's been in camp in Miami, he's gotten great sparing, so I have been very pleased with the way training has been going in regards to his career," he said.
