The Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation National Championships held under the patronage of Dr. Norman Gay attracted a full house on Saturday night at the National Center for Performing Arts.

The end result for the overall National Titles, saw  James ‘Jay’ Darling recapture the men's title by overcoming some strong competitors that included super heavyweight Teddy Gray, Bantam weight Paul Wilson, Desmond Bain out of Grand Bahama, and heavyweights Charles Johnson and defending champion Aaron Green.
On the women's side, new comer to bodybuilding Donna Williams took the overall title defeating  Tammy Stubbs out of Grand Bahama, defending champion Fay Rolle and veteran Della Thomas.
Following his victory, Darling said he was somewhat concerned that he would not have captured the title because of the competition from Gray and a few others who were in good condition.
"Gray and Bain looked good out there and seemed to have been in great condition, but I had to pull some performances out of the bag," said Darling.
“Also this year I took some more time to concentrate on me and worked on fine tuning my body.  Last year I was trying to help others get ready and I kind of neglected my self, but I was not going to let that happen again this year,” said Darling.
With Darling and Wilson missing out on competing at the World Championships due to financial reasons, he said he is “disappointed” that the Ministry of Sports does not consider bodybuilding and fitness an important sport.
"Not everyone is a track and field athlete but I can only speak for bodybuilding and hopefully we can get more support from the Ministry of Sports," he said.
Darling Dedicated his victory to his late brother Norman Darling who was soldier that died in the Iraq war in 2004. He thanked the general public for supporting them at the Nationals.
"There was a lot of love from the audience towards every performer and we certainly appreciated it. I just wanted to go out there and do my best and ensure that the people got there money worth," he said.
Darling will now prepare himself for the Central American and Caribbean Championship in Grenada, the Masters World Championship in Poland and the World Championships in Doha, Qatar all this year.  Although the National Championship was an event hosted by the federation, the New Providence Bodybuilding and Fitness Association stepped up and provided the three winners with prizes of $1,400 plus free gym membership.
Shanice Bain winner of the Body Fitness, Williams and Darling were the recipients of the prizes.
Williams, who works out at Iron Man Gym and who has burst onto the scene after wining the Novice Title said she will now focus on the CAC Championships and take it one step at a time as she continues to build her career.
BBFF president Danny Sumner said the overall performances by each individual competitor was “exceptional” and he thanked the public for supporting the event which was sold out with standing room only.
"We are prepared to take bodybuilding to the next level in this country and ensuring every island is represented at the Nationals. Grand Bahama and New Providence have vibrant associations that are working, and now we neet to get the other Family Islands on board on a consistant basis," explained Sumner.
With Wilson and Darling not being able to attend the World Championships in Taiwan despite a special invitation from the world federation, Sumner said the reason was lack of funding as they were not able to secure a sponsor in time.
"Wilson secured a sponsor, but by that time it was too late.  I had been calling all over to find a sponsor for Darling but got no positive response," said Sumner.
Explaining that Bodybuilding is an expensive sport, he again called on the government for a little more support.  He said the federation has not gotten its annual stipend from the government.
"We are not complaining about the money we are getting now, but we just want the government to see that it is an expensive and worthwhile sport and the athletes has to do a lot of travelling along with intense training," explained Sumner.
